Intro

  • Age: 22 years old
  • City in Ukraine where you lived before the full-scale invasion (forced relocation): Kharkiv
  • Specialization: Architecture

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

I graduated from an architecture college and continued my studies at a university in Kharkiv, with plans to pursue an internship at an architecture office.

The decisive factor for my choice of profession was the realization that architecture beautifully combines creativity and technicality, both of which deeply interest me. As I delved deeper into the world of architecture, I came to understand the profound significance of this field. To me, architecture is about serving people and the community, cherishing what already exists, and shaping a beautiful, sustainable future.

FORCED EMIGRATION

During the first two weeks of the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, my family and I hid in the subway in Kharkiv. However, it became increasingly difficult to stay in the city, so we decided to move abroad. The journey to Austria was long and challenging, involving a difficult trip through Ukraine to the border. I still remember the many volunteers at the borders who helped us during this transition.

Austria was the first country we came to because my father had studied here and had friends who supported us during this time.

LIFE IN AUSTRIA

The main obstacle I’ve faced in my professional development and employment has been the German language, along with limited knowledge of Austrian society and culture. Despite these challenges, I am supported daily by the thought that I am here to learn and grow, and that everything will be okay as long as I keep moving forward. My family and friends are also an incredible source of strength and encouragement.

If I could speak to myself at the start of my journey in Austria, I would say: “Value the moment and trust the process.”

To other Ukrainians living abroad, my advice would be:

  • Try to appreciate and understand the country, its people, and its culture.
  • Surround yourself with like-minded people who will support and inspire you.

Professional Integration HUB

I would describe the Professional Integration HUB as a ‘professional and encouraging community.’ For me, this HUB represents strong support in building a career and fostering connections within the Austrian-Ukrainian community. It’s also a place where growth happens step by step.

Now that I’m halfway through the internship, my impressions are very positive. Although the first couple of weeks were challenging due to so many new things, I now go to the office feeling like it’s my second home.

What surprised me most about Austrian corporate culture is the monthly tradition where all team members gather for a presentation about updates in the bureau, followed by a shared meal. It’s a wonderful way to strengthen teamwork and build connections.

I have experienced ‘imposter syndrome’ at times in new environments. My approach to coping is to focus on doing my best, seek feedback from more experienced colleagues, and value their guidance. I also remind myself that challenges are essential for growth and make continuous learning a priority.

My greatest achievement within the program has been meeting expectations and earning the satisfaction of my colleagues and supervisors, who offered me the opportunity to extend my internship at the bureau.

Additionally, I’ve found like-minded individuals and even made new friends through the program. Connecting with people who share similar interests and passions has been incredibly inspiring.

PLANS AFTER PARTICIPATING IN THE PROGRAM

The internship in the Professional Integration HUB program has shown me that it is possible to realize my potential and ambitions in Austria based on my own experience.

Regarding opportunities to implement European experience to help Ukraine, I believe that Ukrainian architectural offices should take internship programs more seriously. These programs can benefit both parties by fostering mutual learning and sharing of expertise. Additionally, international collaborations could significantly improve the Ukrainian educational system.

Before this program, I had no experience in the Austrian professional environment. Now, after completing the program, I feel I have made a strong start on this journey of integration.
